Rick Santorum Learned Nothing After His Failed 2012 Run for President, Already Pledging to Slam the Door on Hardworking Immigrants

Newest GOP Candidate Forgets America’s Proud Immigrant Heritage, Would Send Country Back to the 19th Century, the Era of the Chinese Exclusion Act

WASHINGTON – Former Sen. Rick Santorum has officially launched another bid for the White House today in Pennsylvania. Below are remarks by Lupe Lopez, the Executive Director of the Alliance for Citizenship:

“Although Rick Santorum has little to no chance of becoming President – his candidacy is notable for how extreme his positions on immigration have become.  Just a few weeks ago, he literally said he wanted to take America back to the 1880s - calling for dramatically reducing levels of legal immigration into this country, and blaming hardworking immigrant families for all of America’s problems. The 1880s was the era of the Chinese Exclusion Act, this country’s strictest immigration policy that outright discriminated against an entire ethnic group, giving racial preferences to other immigrants allowed in the country.

“It’s shameful how these extremist anti-immigrant positions are becoming the norm in today’s Republican Party. Other candidates including Scott Walker and Mike Huckabee have joined Santorum in attacking America’s welcoming history of legal immigration.

“We are a nation of immigrants, built on the shoulders and sweat of immigrant workers. Every day, immigrant small business owners, high-tech and service industry workers contribute millions of dollars to our economy. Santorum didn’t learn after his failed bid in 2012 that the path to the White House runs through the Asian Pacific American, Latino, and immigrant communities, and no candidate can win without supporting a fair immigration policy that benefits the American economy of the 21st Century.”
