With Knee-Jerk Reactions to Syrian Refugees, Governors & Members of Congress Exploit Tragedy for Political Gain
WASHINGTON – Today, at least 24 governors and other Republican leaders, including Speaker Paul Ryan, have declared that they will turn away Syrian refugees relocated to their states or ban them from entry altogether. As of September, only around 1,800 Syrian refugees have been placed in the United States.
Below are remarks from Lupe Lopez, Executive Director of the Alliance for Citizenship:
“It's shameful that our elected officials have chosen to exploit tragedy for cheap political gain. By issuing a knee-jerk response in banning all refugees from settling in their states, these callous politicians are blaming an entire people for the acts of a few individuals.”
“The perpetrators behind last week’s attacks are the very people Syrian refugees are trying to escape from, and for any American leader to turn them away and group them as the same is irresponsible, immoral, and a betrayal of our nation’s values. Instead of slamming the door on families and children fleeing violence, these states should be doing all they can to support refugees and help them acclimate to their new lives in the United States.“
