Although Trump Was Missing from NH Forum, #TrumpEffect Was On Full Display in Candidates' Out of Touch Immigration Responses

Most GOP Presidential Candidates Not Only Call for Mass Deportation of Families, But Want to Halt Legal Immigration that Fuels U.S. Economy

WASHINGTON, DC – At tonight's sneak-peek presidential candidates' forum in New Hampshire, candidates failed to mention any serious solution to our country's immigration crisis, with the exception of Sen. Lindsey Graham. Below are remarks from Lupe Lopez, the Executive Director of the Alliance for Citizenship:

“Although Donald Trump wasn’t on stage this evening – his rhetoric made cameo appearances in nearly every candidate’s extreme stances on immigration. Not only were the GOP candidates eager to build their anti-immigrant credibility with their calls for mass deportation, but candidates like Jeb Bush went further than ever before in their support for reducing legal immigration.”

“From sending drones to the border, to forcibly rounding up hardworking mothers, fathers, and Dreamers, to slamming the door in the face of future legal immigrants, tonight’s forum showed that nearly every GOP candidate for president stands with Donald Trump when it comes to immigration and deporting 11 million immigrants.

“Americans know that our country was built by immigrants and recognize the enormous contributions that hardworking immigrant families make to our communities and economy. Sadly, the answers we saw tonight were just a preview of the mean-spirited, anti-immigrant rhetoric we’ll continue to see during the GOP debates.

"Latino, Asian, and immigrant voters will be aware of what was said tonight, and we will remember what these candidates said they would do to our families and neighbors when it comes time to vote.”
