DREAMers Who Wish to Serve Our Country Deserve Respect and Gratitude - Not Political Attacks
The Alliance for Citizenship Urges the House of Representatives to Vote "NO" on Brooks Amendment, Support DACA-Eligible Youth Serving in Our Armed Forces
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the House of Representatives will vote on an amendment by Rep. Mo Brooks that would strip out bipartisan immigration language in the National Defense Authorization Act. The bipartisan amendment adopted in Committee, offered by Rep. Gallego asks the Pentagon to consider allowing young immigrants who are recipients of DACA to serve in the U.S. military. However, anti-immigrant Republicans in the House are determined to remove the provision from the bill.
“This should be a no-brainer – many of the young, talented DREAMers who have DACA grew up and went to school here – they want to serve and sacrifice for the country they love” said Lia Parada, Legislative Director of the Alliance for Citizenship.
“We hope that reasonable minds will prevail and oppose the Brooks amendment which runs counter to our national interest and security. We call on Members of Congress to oppose the political games of the far-right and preserve the common sense, bipartisan language in the bill which will direct the Secretary of Defense to allow DREAMers to serve. Immigrant young people who want to defend our country in the armed forces deserve respect and admiration, not more Republican attacks."
