“If Boehner Was Stepping Down Anyway, He Should’ve Passed Immigration Reform to Better the Country”

“If Boehner Was Stepping Down Anyway, He Should’ve Passed Immigration Reform to Better the Country”

WASHINGTON, DC - Below is a statement by Lia Parada, the Legislative & Policy Director of the Alliance for Citizenship:

“It’s a shame America had to bear a huge cost just for John Boehner to learn a lesson. His fear of a conservative revolt prevented him from passing comprehensive immigration reform, which would have reduced the federal deficit by nearly $200 billion over the next 10 years, and by an additional $700 billion in the 10 years after that. He could have welcomed a new generation of future doctors, entrepreneurs, and business leaders into a workforce that would only have added to the greatness of this country. If he had the courage, he would have kept millions of families together—instead of deporting moms, dads, sisters, and brothers. He could’ve modernized our country’s immigration system to attract the best and hardworking. Yet, ultimately he will now leave his speakership with no major achievements or legacy.”
